A RARE AND HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT ARTEFACT RECOVERED FROM HMS ADVENTURE IN 1775 AFTER CAPTAIN JAMES COOK'S SECOND VOYAGE TO THE PACIFIC: ENGLAND/SANDWICH ISLAND 18TH CENTURY A 'coconut husker' made by a ship's carpenter aboard HMS Adventure in the style and design of a Native Islander's ethnographical 'coconut husker', set with an engraved and inscribed copper plaque: A memento from The Sandwich Islands Coconut Husker used aboard HMS Adventure and recovered from The Royal Dockyard Deptford 1775 15.5cm high, 49.5cm long, 20cm wide (max) Provenance : Found in a Scottish attic after centuries of lying hidden in a crate Ex Private Scottish collection Captain James Cook's second voyage aboard the Resolution and accompanied by HMS Adventure set sail in July 1772. The discovery of the southern eight islands of the Sandwich Islands group was in 1775. The given name was chosen in honour of John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, First Lord of the Admiralty. The copper plaque and inscription however should not be read as The Sandwich Islands 'Owhyhee' (The Hawaiian Islands) which were later discovered on January 18th, 1778, on Captain Cook's third voyage. Rather the inscription refers to 'South Sandwich Islands' lying to the south east of South Georgia and only renamed later with the word 'South' to distinguish them from the 'Sandwich Islands' now known as the Hawaiian Islands. Notwithstanding, during Cook's second voyage he visited Easter Island, Tahiti, Society Islands, Niue, Tonga, New Hebrides, New Caledonia, Norfolk Islands, Palmerston Island and South Georgia. The crew onboard having been exposed to various types of 'coconut huskers' adapted those designs into the example we now see, having been rescued from HMS Adventure in 1775. A rare example of 18th century cross-cultural design and adaptation. On the 13th of July 1772 HMS Adventure left Plymouth commanded by Tobias Furneaux one of two ships the other being 'Resolution' commanded by a captain James Cook. They were to be the first ships to cross the arctic circle. Tobias Furneaux was also the first man to circumnavigate the globe in both directions. 'Breadfruit, ripe bananas, taro and pandanus nuts mixed with coconut cream and cooked with hot stones' was the favourite pudding of Captain James Cook. Coconuts were essential on board ship in the late 18th century and were stored de-husked. They were often traded for European goods when fresh provisions were needed. 'Twenty coconuts or breadfruit for a forty-penny nail; ten for a white glass bead and six for an amber one' (Salmond, p. 68) was the going rate at the time. On return from Cooks second voyage in 1775, HMS Adventure entered the Royal Dockyard at Deptford to be converted into a store ship. It was at this time this coconut husker must have been acquired as a valuable 'Momento' (as stated on the Plaque) of the now famous voyages of the Adventure and the Resolution.

AN UNUSUAL BRASS SWAN COLLAR NETHERLANDS, DATED '1891' Etched with 'M. BAK. AGTERBROEK.' and date 1891 2.5cm high, 7cm diameter (max) Literature : Further 'swan collars' can be seen with Finch and Co, no.13, catalogue no. 30, 2018 and no. 60, catalogue no. 38, 2022 Originally a native of northern Europe the mute swan 'Cygnus Olor' was domesticated early on and raised in captivity first for its meat, and later for its great beauty. Medieval records show that there were domesticated flocks in Britain just prior to the 12th century and that swans were regarded as the property of the Crown. They could only be raised and traded under royal licence enforced by the King or Queen's Swan Master and his deputies. Today an annual ceremony of 'swan upping' is still performed on the River Thames in July where all mute swans are rounded up and marked for ownership either by the Crown or by the Vintners and Dyers Livery Companies, who were granted rights of ownership in the 15th century. The welfare of the birds is still taken seriously at this event at which they are inspected, weighed and ringed or marked with a nick to the beak. However, in the Netherlands hundreds of swans were owned by 'zwanendriften' or 'swan herders' in a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages. The young swans were caught, and their wings pinioned so that they could not fly, and their beaks marked with a tattoo of ownership. Upon their release as they could not fly, they spent the winter stranded on the frozen marsh and ponds walking in search of food. At around two years of age, they were caught by the herders by means of a wire loop around their neck and sold primarily for meat. This practice continued into the 21st century and was only recently outlawed in January 2017. This brass collar was most probably made as a form of protection for the swan belonging to its owner and would have prevented it from being taken by the 'swan herders' from adjacent land.

A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE EIGHT FOLD 'BYOBU' SCREEN WITH NINE 'MANCHURIAN' CRANES MEIJI PERIOD- 19TH CENTURY Paper, gold leaf, silk, ink, wood, metal, after Sakai Hoitsu (1761-1828) signed: 'Hoitsu Itsu'/Rimpa School" 179cm high-533cm wide, 5 feet 10½ ins, 17 feet 5¾ ins wide This very large screen depicts seven 'Manchurian Cranes standing and eating, while a 'pair' of cranes gently glide downwards to join the 'flock'. 'Byobu', which means wind walls ( 屏 byo wall and 風 bu wind), are ornate and decorated 'mobile' walls used to separate interior spaces and provide privacy within a section of a room. As their name suggests, they were originally used as windbreakers in the 'airy' Japanese residences of antiquity. Born into the family of the feudal Lords of Himeji castle, Sakai Hōitsu had a privileged upbringing providing him the opportunity to study Noh drama, haiku poetry, tea-ceremony, music and painting. As was common during the Edo period, Hoitsu began his study of painting with the officially sanctioned 'Kano School', later receiving influence from and instruction in the contemporary Ukiyo-e, Maruyama-Shijo and Nagasaki styles. Taking 'tonsure' as a monk in 1797 Hoitsu freed himself of his significant familial obligations and immersed himself in the study of the life and art of Ogata Korin (1658-1716). He was inspired by the fact that a century earlier Hoitsu's family had been among Korin's chief patrons; numerous masterpieces by Korin were preserved in their family collection. In 1815, 100 years after Korin's death, Hoitsu published 'Korin Hyakuzu' (One Hundred Paintings by Korin), woodblock print reproductions of paintings by the master. Besides honouring Korin in this way, he clearly traced the lineage of what would come to be known in a later age as the Rinpa (Rimpa) School. Hoitsu, while taking Korin's works as his model, went on to create highly affecting works reflective of the refined tastes of his day.

Y A RARE LARGE GERMAN TURNED BLONDE RHINOCEROS HORN GOBLET 17TH CENTURY Old smooth silky pale honey coloured patina 15cm high, 12.5cm diameter A passionate collector of curiosities, the Emperor Rudolf II of Prague (1552-1612) owned a collection of 13 turned rhinoceros horn drinking vessels, one of which, now in Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen, he had made himself. He believed them to be unique in having the magical ability to detect the presence of poison. Goblets and wine cups made of rhinoceros horn became extremely popular amongst the Princely courts of Renaissance Europe, not only for their powers of detection, but because rhinoceros horn was also considered to be a powerful aphrodisiac, a belief that had already been held in the Middle East and Asia for centuries. Y A FINE AND RARE PORTUGUESE MACAO CARVED IVORY DEVOTIONAL PLAQUE PORTUGUESE MACAO, MID 17TH CENTURY Depicting St Jerome kneeling before Christ crucified, gripping the cross in one hand holding a stone in the other symbolic of his asceticism, his hands and feet with the stigmata- a sign of his passionate Christian devotion, his cardinal's hat and robe hanging in the tree, God the Father in the clouds above a lion at the Saint's Feet above him two medieval church towers, the scene probably based on a European engraving, modern stand plaque 12cm high, 8.5cm wide, 1cm deep Provenance : Ex Private collection of the Berkeley Family, Spetchley Park, Worcestershire, catalogued in a 1949 inventory as 'A Carved Panel (4¾' x 3½") of St Jerome Kept in the Strong Room'. In 374 A.D St Jerome became seriously ill in Antioch and two of his travelling companions died. In this state he dreamt that he appeared before God's judgement seat and was condemned for being a Ciceronian rather than a Christian. He took this experience very seriously and became a hermit in the desert of Chalcis in Syria for five years. He gave up the Classics he knew and loved and learnt Hebrew in order to study scripture. Proficient in both Greek and Hebrew, he went on to complete the enormous task of producing a standard Latin text of the Bible which he revised according to the meaning of the original texts. He then began to translate the Gospels and the Psalter and over time produced all, or nearly all, of the Bible in what became known as the 'Vulgate' version.
