A LARGE MARBLE FEMALE FIGURE EMBLEMATIC OF 'THE HARVEST' ITALIAN, LATE 19TH CENTURY Standing female figure in traditional costume with necklace, holding sheaf of corn, on a circular base, unsigned 131cm high It has been suggested that this impressive figure could also be titled "Ruth" in reference to the biblical story. However, the iconography of the harvest emblematic of success, fertility and the season of Autumn was also commonly found in Italian workshops in Florence and Rome at this period. Condition Report: With wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. The whole with polished surface for skin/flesh and rougher mostly unpolished surface for clothing, corn etc. Some rubbing to rougher surface detailing. Some old signs of damp/exposure. Natural veining and inclusions. Under UV spot restoration or infill visible to: 2 small points on head, area above her left eye, left hand and fingers, ends of corn, large toe on left foot. Some edge wear and nibbles/chips to base edge. Slightly dirty Please see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report. Y A RARE SOUTH AFRICAN BLACK RHINOCEROS HORN PRESTIGE STAFF OR SCEPTRE TSONGA/NORTH NGUNI, MID 19TH CENTURY Finely carved with the head of a chief, with short haft drilled for a wrist thong, smooth old silky burnished patina lacking at the base where it has been held and used, modern stand 39.5cm long, 43.5cm high with base Provenance : Ex English Private collection Acquired late 1980's Literature : Art of South East Africa 2002, K. Conru no.104, pipe bowl very similar in the style and mimicking the carved head-ring of the rhinoceros horn sceptre Among the Tsonga speaking groups living to the North of Kwa Zulu-Natal, Chiefs commissioned long staffs surmounted by male heads with head-rings. These are formed from circular tubes made from a gum-like substance that are sewn into the hair. Head-rings were first adopted in the Zulu Kingdom as a sign of marriage. Tsonga speakers associated their use more generally with the concept of wisdom, age and maturity. In the early 19th Century all the best specialist craftsmen were most probably attached to the Royal Court and the objects they produced were more elaborately carved and decorated than those made for the ordinary homesteads. Even as late as the 1880's objects were being made for important officials in the long established figurative tradition, but this period saw a great deal of mobility in the entire region and carvers localised in one area became influenced by other works as populations migrated. Immediately recognisable as South African, the extremely delicate carved facial features of this sceptre are comparable to the best 'baboon master' staffs. However, the carver who produced this exceptional chiefly prestige item, although firmly in the Nguni traditional style, was probably working at an earlier date. The especially sensitive treatment of the head and face betray the hand of a master.
