With the invasion of Westerners to Meiji Era Japan came a fashion for European dress. The novelty of post World War I fashions and the adventurousness of The Roaring Twenties gripped Japan and the whole 'Moga' art style developed in the 1920's and 1930's. " The term 'Moga' is a Japanese corruption of the words 'Modern' and 'Girl' and was applied across a range of art works from that period.

A Japanese Bizen pottery model of a farmer , Late Edo Period, carrying a basket of peaches and crying out in surprise as he is attacked by a troop of Macaques intent on pilfering his produce, some details enhanced with coloured lacquer, the whole standing on shaped base, 21.5cm high x 14cm wide
There is a hand written label in French affixed to the base of the group stating this piece was collected after the Siege of Shanghai (January 1855) by Alfred Eyben (born in Anvers 18th December 1834) ' a sailor on board the Jeanne d'Arc under Captain Gambard in 1856. According to French naval records the 42-gun frigate Jeanne d'Arc was active between 1852 and 1898 and took part in the shelling of Shanghai on 8th January 1856.
