The present lot was drawn while studying at the Slade. Paolozzi felt that the Art School was "dominated by middle-class, ex-officer type attitudes with which he was unable to identify and which in his view favoured half-baked, gutless art. Oxford, the focal point of elitist and polite notions of culture made matters worse." (F. Whitford, Eduardo Paolozzi , Exhibition Catalogue, London, Tate Gallery, 22 September - 31 October 1971, p.7) The present work depicting old bones may be a witty swipe at the antiquated, dry ethos of the Slade in the 1940s.

Light discolouration to the sheet throughout with light surface dirt, most notable to the edges. Light handling creases throughout with a diagonal crease running through the upper left corner. There is evidence of two marks of staining to the centre of the lower section of the sheet. The lower edge is torn evidence of removal from sketchbook. The study verso with some very light handling creases throughout the sheet. Overall in original condition.

The canvas has been lined. There is an old repair (approx. 5cm) to the upper right quadrant which corresponds with a patch (verso). Some undulation to the canvas, particularly lower right quadrant, which is possibly a result of the lining process. Craquelure and surface dirt throughout. Inspection under UV does not reveal any flaring, however it is presumed there is some due to the aforementioned area of repair, and this is being obscured by a thick varnish.

The canvases are both relined.
The first picture has a subtle craquelure and presents an unevenly applied varnish. UV light reveals various scattered retouching, most notably in the foliage in the background. Further retouching is present on the figures, most evidently on the hat of the man at the centre.
The second picture presents an evenly applied varnish and fewer retouches in the background. However, a scratch, which has not though penetrated the canvas, yes is quite deep, is visible to the left of the group of people. In conclusion, a few retouches are present on the visages.
